bicycling tour that passes through the Nilgiri Mountains in the South Indian states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu . The event has the twin objectives of promoting bicycling as an activity and spreading awareness about the bio-diversity, flora and fauna of the Nilgiris. It was started in 2008 by the RideACycle Foundation, a not-for-profit trust that promotes sustainable transport, responsible travel and environmentally and socially responsible bicycling opportunities. The central purpose of the tour, also known as TFN, is to promote cycling and ensure that it gains popularity as a sport as well as a sustainable means of transport. In TFN 2008 participants came in from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai and the United States of America. The event had riders from a variety of backgrounds: Air Force officers shared the road with youngsters while professional riders took on vineyard owners in a melange of backgrounds. United by the love for cycling, the riders would often assist each other on the tour, bonhomie that is rare in competitive sport. The tour also sees participation from adventure and outdoor gear companies like Wildcraft who specially designed hydration packs to support the riders in 2008.
Tour RouteEditThe route in TFN 2008 was Mysore, Madikeri, Sultan Battery, Ooty, Masinagudi, Bandipur and back via Mysore to Bangalore. The route measuring 919 km had 56 riders participating in the age groups of 18 to 50. .
The tour passed through heavily forested areas as well as settlements where residents offered encouragement and refreshments alike, making the TFN a cycling event that integrates closely with communities that it passes . In 2009 the TFN will take a modified route going through Bangalore, Mysore, Hassan, Madikeri, Irupu, Sultanbathery, Ooty and terminating at Mysore (901 km in all)..
